Based on the first novel in Lois Lowry's quartet, “The Giver” is set in the future, in a society where all differences between individuals have been erased and there is no possibility of choice. As every year during the “Ceremony of Twelve,” only one will be assigned the task of Receiver of Memory.
Sixteen-year-old Jonas will begin to experience firsthand all those sensations denied to every other member of the community: colors, the meaning of love, pain, frustration, and the terrible secret of the Society he lives in. He then realizes that the path to knowledge is a very dangerous one.
