The story begins when Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch), founder of WikiLeaks, and his colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) join forces to become "watchdogs" capable of monitoring the activities of the powerful and privileged. On a shoestring budget, the two create an online platform that allows their whistleblowers to anonymously transmit confidential information, shining a spotlight on the dark corners where government secrets and corporate crimes are hidden. Soon, they manage to expose more significant news than all the legendary traditional media outlets combined. But when Assange and Berg get their hands on the largest collection of classified information in US history, they clash, and must answer fundamental questions of our time: what is the cost of keeping secrets in a democratic society, and what is the price to pay when they are revealed?
