In 1962, after the closure of one of New York's best clubs where he worked, Italian-American bouncer Tony Lip desperately needs to find a job to support his family. He accepts a job working for African-American pianist Don Shirley and decides to accompany him on a tour of the Southern United States. Despite their differences and initial clashes, a strong friendship will develop between the two.
